WHO: More Dangers of Radiation Contaminated Food

Authorities in Japan are required to act quickly to ban the sale of foods derived from the area surrounding the Fukushima nuclear facilities if the food products contain high radiation. The warning was delivered by the WHO.

Previously, the International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed that radiation levels in some dairy products and vegetables in Japan in a high level compared to levels disarakan for consumption. The Japanese government also asked to make a decision to limit shipments of food from the area exposed to radiation.

WHO spokesman at the United Nations says that contaminated food will increase the long-term risk to health compared with radioactive particles in the air that can be lost within a few days.

The assertion was made after the nuclear crisis after the tsunami in Japan. The WHO also said the radiation risk to the public much greater than the plant workers if food has been exposed to radiation.

"Japanese authorities will soon take a decision to ban the consumption of foods derived from radiation exposure zone. Consumption of products continuously exposed to radiation increases the risk than exposure to radiation from the air," said Gregory Hartl.

The Japanese government so far has stopped shipments of milk from one area and spinach from other areas. Also found are also two types of contamination of other vegetables, namely canola and chrysanthemum leaves.

Japanese health authorities also prohibit residents in the prefecture of Fukushima to not drink tap water because of contaminated radioactive iodine. Even so, the amount of exposure is mentioned does not endanger health.

Anxiety about the dangers of radiation also makes China issued a decision to test all food products imported from Japan.

Hartl said the impact of radiation on health depending on the type of food and exposed soil type, amount of exposure, and amount of food consumed. But the delay could make a higher radiation exposure so that the impact is more dangerous.

Scientists believe if the Soviet government at that prohibits children from around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant to drink milk after the explosion, perhaps thousands of cases of thyroid cancer can be prevented
